Two more suspects have been arrested in the deadly armed robbery attack in Offa, Kwara State, last month. This comes three weeks after the police circulated pictures of four suspects who were captured by closed-circuit camera of the banks that they attacked.

At least five banks were raided during the April 5 incident. Seventeen people, including nine police officers, were confirmed killed by the police. The suspects taken into custody are: Kunle Ogunleye (a.k.a.: Arrow), a native of Kwara State, and Micheal Adikwu, a native of Apa Local Government Area, Benue State.  Ogunleye, 35, was arrested on Sunday in Oro, Kwara State.

One of the suspect, Adikwu was reportedly dismissed as a police corporal following his arrest in 2012 on alleged criminal offences. He was charged to court in Kwara State for compromising police operations and releasing armed robbery suspects. He reportedly escaped from prison in 2015 and joined armed robbery gangs.

It was not immediately clear whether he was found guilty and convicted by the court or whether he escaped from prison while still in remand as his trial was underway. He was arrested by the police intelligence response team (IRT) led by CSP. Abba Kyari in Kwara State two weeks ago, about a week after the police declared him wanted and circulated his picture to the public.

“All suspects arrested among others have confessed” their roles in the Offa carnage. They are assisting the IRT teams in arresting more of the bank robbers as the police continue the investigation” PRNigeria said.

The Consumer Protection Council has commended prompt actions by the management of Obafemi Awolowo University in the alleged sexual harassment of one of its female students.
The Director-General of CPC, Mr. Babatunde Irukera, gave the commendation on Monday in a statement signed by Mr. Abiodun Obimuyiwa, CPC Head of Media.
Irukera said the council had keenly followed the raging controversy regarding the sexually and emotionally abusive conduct of demanding, and or providing sexual gratification in exchange for favourable grades in school.
He noted that the widely discussed controversy underscored an allegedly pervasive practice.
Recently, there had been a leaked and widely circulated audio clip that appeared to have captured a telephonic conversation or ‘negotiation’ between a female student and a member of the faculty at OAU, Ile Ife.
The audio clip had been authenticated and both the member of the faculty and student/victim had been identified.
According to Irukera, “CPC notes the prompt actions taken by the authorities of OAU and commends the responsiveness so far displayed, in addressing a rather insidious and predatory incident.
“The Council further welcomes the expressed commitment of OAU to an open and transparent investigation, as well as the promise to publish the outcome of the investigation.
“The Council encourages OAU to ensure this investigation is broad, balanced and inclusive.”
Irukera urged the management of the school to include people and views from all relevant stakeholders in handling the case to promote confidence, equity and fairness.
He named such stakeholders to include faculty, professional disciplinary bodies, student representation, relevant civil society specialising in sexual harassment, gender objectification, consumer protection and institutions such as the National Human Rights Commission.

Book Review: ?On A Platter of Gold: How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria by Bolaji Abdullahi?
Was the assertion correct that Jonathan, not the PDP, lost the election, correct? Well this trajectory might attempt to answer that question.

“At the birth of the fourth republic in 1999, the PDP won 21 States. By 2003, the party’s rampaging electoral army had captured the entire South West minus Lagos, and brought the number of states under its control to 26. This number increased to 28 after the fair or foul election of 2007, a period which the party seemed to reach its apogee. In 2011, 28 states shrank to 23. Now with this parting of ways, the PDP was left with only 18 states.” Pg 284
I have worked in the news media, for the past year and some, and there’s very little about the intrigues of the current admin that I’m not aware of. If not in depth, at least enough to hold a judgement either way on the successes or failures of the President Muhammadu Buhari led government.

However, I only became deeply interested in Politics since the past few years, and I admit to not knowing enough about previous governments as I normally would be comfortable with, hence my insatiable hunger for memoirs and tell-all books, especially ones that cover a span of governments since our turn into this democratic dispensation.

Book Review: ?On A Platter of Gold: How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria by Bolaji Abdullahi?

Still, I approached On a Platter of Gold with caution. Written by someone in the opposition party as at then, one would of course be justified for keeping a healthy amount of salt nearby when digesting the ‘revelations’ in the book. Suffice to say, I half expected a hack job.
I was pleasantly surprised.

The first word I’d employ to describe the book would be ‘honest’. I had read Segun Adeniyi’s brilliant book – “Against the run of Play” last year, and I had an idea of some of the nuances of the stories, and the actors predicted within, so I expected the narrative from an APC member to be from a biased narrative. Again, no, that didn’t happen. It isn’t a hack job on Jonathan, and isn’t a praise-singing exercise for the APC either.

The book begins grimly, in the presidential villa immediately the presidency realized that the election had been lost. The drama was an extension of the story Segun Adeniyi had told of the advice to the president to concede. However, it goes a lot further. It explores the multitude of advice that also came for the president to not concede either, with the players and the actions they advanced.
Book Review: ?On A Platter of Gold: How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria by Bolaji Abdullahi?

Few would realize it, but the country came very close to full blown chaos with that loss by the incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan. Bolaji Abdulahi goes deep into the minutiae of this near escape, without holding back, naming the perpetrators, and describing their actions. The villains haven’t got the condemnation they deserve, and neither have the heroes got as much credit as they should have. Osita Chidoka, and Bello Mohammed Adoke, both come in for deserved mention in the narrative.

Rumours of a plot by Security chiefs also abounded around 2015, especially on social media, and we the watchers were treated to different conspiracy theories that seemed, in the cold analysis of reality after the dust had settled, very fanciful, like our collective minds had taken flights of fancy in the frenzy of elections. However, Abdullahi shows us, in the book, that it wasn’t as much a fanciful notion, as we thought. As clichéd as it sounds, there really was fire behind this smoke. Plenty of fire. Apparently, the conspiracy theorists weren’t raving mad.

And the inevitable question, ‘How much was Jonathan aware of?’

The two most used buzz words in describing Jonathan during his administration are ‘clueless’ and ‘weak’. How valid are these descriptions? Bolaji dismantles the latter, and reinforces the former. For a president whose Security Chiefs ran rings around him with the insurgency fight, arms procurement, and most importantly, the alleged plot to seize power in the  aftermath of the defeat by the APC, few could argue about the cluelessness of Jonathan (insert President Buhari’s awareness level joke here if you like). I have however always thought that his supporter’s willingness to accept this moniker is to perhaps shield him as much as is possible from being responsible for actions that he should be held accountable for (but that is another story).

Book Review: ?On A Platter of Gold: How Jonathan won and lost Nigeria by Bolaji Abdullahi?

On a Platter of Gold deals extensively with the different shenanigans run in and around the president, including and not limited to the Sure-P programme, and the exit of Christopher Kolade, and the credibility his exit took away from the programme.
As to the weakness appellation, credited to Jonathan, this book deconstructs it. Very often Jonathan made some head scratching decisions, firing some who most people expected him to keep, and keeping people he was expected to fire, despite being under immense pressure.

Jonathan’s stubbornly poor handling of the of the breakaway faction of the PDP governors, and his refusal to back down on the Onyinlola as secretary general issue point to a wilfulness rather than a lack of, as well as his decision to heed the less strident calls of advice to call the President-elect to concede rather than leave ambiguities that would create platforms for post-election conflicts, all point to strength and sureness of purpose, rather than weakness. However, it almost seemed like the wrong decisions every time he made them.

To paraphrase the author in the book, Jonathan was weak when he needed to be strong and strong when he needed to appear meek.

How did the 2011 elections affect that of 2015? How quickly did someone lose so much goodwill barely four years after winning very convincingly at the previous polls? The ‘gentleman agreement’ pre 2011 to only serve one term? Or his performance in the years succeeding the 2011 victory? Which one was more instrumental? Where does the author lean? The author makes a very persuasive argument that, contrary to perceptions held by a large number of the Nigerian population, the 2011 elections wasn’t really a North vs South elections. It was more a ‘Split North vs a united South.’ And a ‘North’ whose power brokers didn’t rally around their own challenger, Buhari.

What changed pre 2015? What permutations decided the swing, from hero, popular president, to villain, whose biggest praise in the aftermath of the elections, was for his honourable concession phone call?

Like militant herdsmen, like Boko Haram. Boko Haram was clearly a defining factor in the Jonathan presidency, as the militant herdsmen seems to be one for the Buhari Presidency. It is said that the group’s strengthening during his time may have been responsible for his supporter’s disenchantment. This much is unarguable, however, how much of it was inevitable, and how much did Jonathan bring to hasten? This is also something that Bolaji Abdullahi treats in depth in the book. Aside giving the readers a quick run of history, with the formation of the group and how they became militant, Abdullahi also attempts to chronicle the Jonathan government’s bungling of the war against insurgency. Fairly, he does point out areas where the Jonathan government’s hands were tied, especially with the blockading of arms purchase by the United States government.

Nonetheless, there were many times that the former president displayed disdain for optics and played right into the hands of opposition. One of the most unbelievable series of actions, aside the albatross, Chibok was the rally in Kaduna after the bomb blast in Nyanya.

“However, perhaps more than the bomb blasts, what would outrage Nigerians even more, were the images of President Jonathan at a political rally in Kano the very next day. Words like “Insensitive”, “irresponsible” and “wicked” were freely hurled at him as Nigerians watched the president dancing to the music of popular Local Singer, Sani Danja, even as emergency workers were still picking up body parts at the scene of the Nyanya Blast” pg 202

Bolaji doesn’t exactly absolve the opposition for their actions in the lead up to the elections as well. He subtly points out their complicity in the subsidy removal saga which, as with all things in life, was the singular action that made a previously respected finance minister to become a sort of pariah amongst her previous idolizers. The vociferousness of the opposition, served as a really strong bulwark against constructive and forward looking conversations on the subsidy removal in 2012. The government, as expected, backed down from that process, and rather than the right thing being done, merely postponed the inevitable and kicked the ball down the road for his successor
.
Review: On Platter of Gold, A Book By Bolaji Abdullahi
“They pointed out that the 2012 budget had allocated N1billion for feeding the president and the vice president in the year. This inspired some placards, which asked whether the president ate Louis Vuitton rice or Gucci beans. And when on 3rd January a protester was shot and killed in Ilorin, this image went viral on various social media platforms, further fuelling the smoking rage all over the country. Seeing the anger that was provoked by the death of one protester, others began to post images of other ‘casualties’ that were not even related to the protests. This further enraged the protesters and portrayed the government as repressive” pg 117

The 2015 election was very divisive, and the dirtiest of slurs were used in the lead up to the polls. Contrary to what a number of people have said today as regards our unity and the current president, evidence points to the 2015 elections as being responsible for the current level of division in the country, especially along ethnic and religious lines. This is what happens when politics is played with desperation. And the book attempts to paint this picture without being exceedingly dramatic, and is convincing enough to ensure that the reader isn’t scoffing at the postulations contained.

Exceedingly well researched, original and precise, Bolaji Abdullahi writes with really good diction; elevated, yet very relatable. This ensures that the book will be enjoyed by the historian, political pundit and the literary purist as well.

Like the Macbeth quote in reference to Jonathan – “If Chance may have me King, why, chance may crown me without stir”, On a Platter of Gold doesn’t need much embellishment to convince that it deserves its place on the shelves of Nigeria’s better political chronicles. It’s already headed there.

Parents in Peru murder their child and livestream it
There is a horrific video trending online that shows a mother stomping on a child and hitting the baby against the wall. The child eventually died and the parents have been charged with murdering their baby.

The video is reportedly from the Latin American speaking part of Peru and was filmed on May 1. Local media say the man and woman walked into the local police station in Yungayo, a small town in Peru. They had with them a dead 10-month-old baby who they claim got sick and died on their way to the hospital, so they brought the child to the station instead to ask for directions to the morgue.

Nigerian man dies two days after his one year wedding anniversary

I was in Lessel on a Friday evening for a State Executive Council meeting of YOWICAN Benue State Chapter when he called that he wanted to see me the next day. I agreed that I will see him on arrival the next day in the morning at 8am.
I arrived Makurdi in time and actually we close to the venue of our meeting, NKST Idye. However, I dozed off shortly before the scheduled time for our meeting. He kept to time as it has been with him most of the times.
Minutes passed and I wasn't around, he called several times without response from my end for nearly an hour, my phone has been silent since the meeting started the previous evening. Good enough, noise from children around wake me up some I hurried down to join him.
I arrived the venue and he was already anxious and tensed. "What could have been disturbing him?" I asked quietly within.
We prayed briefly and started talking, I have never seen him has difficulty in expressing himself like that day, I think my delay in coming to the meeting also contributed.
I later discovered as we talked that any normal person will as well be selective in choice of words the way he was.
I was many things to him that day, he was in love with a young lady who is my younger sister by natural blood. He and the lady in question were also working directly under me with children and youths in the church and as youth leaders next to me in hierarchy.
We discussed the the matter where I emphasized the need for a testimony since those there nurturing will be looking up to them, also asking him as few questions and soon we were done.
A faithful day came, 29th April, 2017, we gathered to be witnesses as they were joined in Holy Matrimony.
On Sunday 29th April, 2018, we greeted with memories as it marked it first anniversary. Even though we didn't celebrate because of the pains my brother was going through, it wasn't without reasons to thank God.
In just 10 months of their marriage, God blessed them with a baby boy. We however you the Anniversary date to trust God for healing of our brother. At home and in the church, it was all prayers. I was really thrilled as how the children and teens whom they had previously taught and mentored vigorously prayed for them.
Two days later precisely on the 1st May, 2018, "God healed him in a better way" in the words of my sister Rita Gerald Dzer.  The Lord called him home!
Gerald Dzer lived a brief but eventful life. He lived for others and has left even at a time we needed him most.
For us as a family, it is the Lord's doing, He is always right. We simply submit to His will even at a time like this.
Our brother will be laid to rest on Thursday, 10th May, 2018 at Tse-Dzer, Mbakutem, Yaav, Turan in Kwande LGA, Benue State.
Farewell Brother!
Rest on!

Wife charged with murder 17 years after her husband
A woman has been charged with the murder of her husband more than 17 years after he went missing.
Denise Williams, 48, was arrested at her office at Florida State University and led away in handcuffs on charges she murdered her husband Mike Williams.
Mike, a good-natured 31-year-old real estate appraiser, supposedly left home to go duck hunting alone on the morning of Dec. 16, 2000. He never returned home and no one was arrested as the case went cold.

Wife charged with murder 17 years after her husband

For more than 17 years Denise Williams stuck by the story that her high school sweetheart was the victim of a tragic boating accident. She asked the media to respect her privacy and took offense when Mike's mother Cheryl Williams refused to buy the theories he fell from the boat and was eaten by alligators. She cut her mother-in-law off from her life as a result and refused to let her have a relationship with her granddaughter.

Just six months after his disappearance, Denise, without notifying Mike's family, convinced a county judge to declare him dead. She collected more than $2 million in life insurance and later married Mike's best friend, Brian Winchester, who sold Mike one of the policies six months before he went missing.
However, five months ago, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement revealed the first major breakthrough in the cold case — the discovery of Mike Williams’ murdered body - and this changed everything.
Denise Merrell Williams, who was planning to spend Tuesday evening celebrating her daughter’s 19th birthday, ended up spending it in custody as she was led away from work at FSU. Minutes before her arrest at about 4 p.m., a Leon County grand jury indicted the 48-year-old on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and accessory after the fact.

Former Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Detective Derrick Wester, one of the first to investigate the case, recalls what it was like interviewing Denise Williams.
He said on Tuesday after her arrest: "She’s the coldest person I’ve ever been around. I hope they’ve got a good case and she gets what she deserves."

Clay Ketcham, Mike’s boss and a close friend, reacted to the arrest, saying: "Oh, my gosh. I never thought this day would get here. It’s horrible. But it’s a feeling of coming to resolution."
Officials, who orchestrated the arrest, have not disclosed what happened to Williams, only that evidence proved conclusively he was murdered

Retired vicar, 79, who was left homeless and nearly penniless after splitting from his 24-year-old gay husband vows to write him into his will
Philip Clements, a 79-year-old retired vicar from the Church of England was left homeless and nearly penniless after he sold his £215,000 home in Sandwich, Kent, to buy a flat in Romania, for his 24-year-old estranged husband Florin Marin, who later left him.
Now, Mr. Clements is hoping to rekindle his relationship with his much younger husband and has vowed to write him into his will.
'I have got to be realistic. I am 80 in August and I want to see him secure. He is the only one I can leave things to. I don't see much of my brothers, and they wouldn't need it. If it goes well, he will be in my will.'
According to MailOnline, the couple who got married last year celebrated their first anniversary in Spain last month and Mr. Clements is very hopeful they will get back and spend September and Christmas together.
Retired vicar, 79, who was left homeless and nearly penniless after splitting from his 24-year-old gay husband vows to write him into his will
He said: 'We have learned. We have both had to adjust. There were rumours he was with somebody else, but he has denied that.
'We are planning to spend September and Christmas together, and hopefully, it can go from there. But we don't want to jump too far just yet.
'He is young, and has plans ahead of him. But I don't think I'm going to die just yet, there is a few years left in the old boy.'
'I'm pretty determined it will work out. We laugh a lot, we are very relaxed around each other, I think this was a phase we needed to get out of our system. He is my husband. I want him to feel secure. I haven't got much to leave him at the moment, as I sold the house.'
The retired vicar added: 'He is not in it for the money. He knows I don't have a lot.'

Earlier this year, Mr. Clements's brother Tony, 68, revealed that he warned him about the relationship with Florin but he wouldn't listen.
'He would say: "I don't know how many years I've got left. I want to live life to the full. I kept telling him: "Don't be a bloody fool". But it was all about this Florin. Philip didn't seem to care about anyone else.'

Karma said that the attackers rounded up the village around 5: am and launched the attack when members of the community were going for early morning prayers.
“Every Wednesday morning, the community conducts mid-week service and most of them were on their way, when the armed militia attacked them. Nine persons were killed and three others sustained life threatening injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Takum General Hospital. The unfortunate thing is that the attackers left before the arrival of security personnel.”
