Gov, Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola

The Governor, State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has blamed the inability of the country to solve most of the challenges confronting it in different sectors to neglect of research and development by Nigerian scholars.
Aregbesola, made this known on Wednesday in Osogbo, when he received members of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
He said, “All the challenges we are facing in this country are due to scholarship problems. Let universities engage in research and development as well as other scholarly programmes to proffer solutions to Nigeria’s problems.”
“You have a society totally unaffected. Universities must apply themselves to the society.  There are so many glaring crises in our society which the universities must address”
The Governor urged Nigerian universities to come up with solutions on matters and problem facing the country including the alarming rate of poverty in Nigeria.
“If hunger is eliminated from our land, then human beings will be normal.  Hunger is the true definition of poverty and poverty is the great grandfather of all crises in Nigeria.”
The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) commended Governor Rauf Aregbesola on the rapid growth of infrastructure development in the state and his high investment in education.

Fatima Habu Usman, a 26-year-old final year student of the Department of Nursing at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), is battling for her life after an acid attack by two unknown tricycle operators in Borno State.

Mr Ibrahim Yusuf, her relative who confirmed the incident to PRNigeria said Fatima was kidnapped on Friday when she entered a tricycle in front of First Bank where she had gone to deposit some cash.
"She boarded a commercial tricycle popularly called Keke NAPEP to Baga Road, but unknown to her, one of the men in the tricycle brought out a white handkerchief and pretended as though he was having a cough.
UNIMAID Acid Victim, Fatima Habu UsmanPRNigeria
"As soon as he touched her face with the handkerchief, she passed out, only to find herself dumped at the Railway Bayan Quarters area, bathed with a substance suspected to be acid around 1 pm.
"It's sad that an innocent young lady like Fatima, who is already in her final year at the university and looked forward to a brighter future could be subjected to such cruel and inhumane treatment by criminal-minded Keke NAPEP operators in the state," Yusuf said.

The UMTH Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee(CMAC), Bashir Tahir said Fatima is recuperating.

Tahir said that medical team was still conducting relevant examinations on her to determine whether she would undergo surgical operations.
In his response, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damien Chukwu, who confirmed the incident, said an investigation was currently ongoing to unravel the culprits behind the attack.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised  to ensure that Leah Sharibu, the only student out of 110 schoolgirls abducted from Dapchi town, still in the custody of Boko Haram is released.
The insurgents had early Wednesday morning released 104 out of the 110 schoolgirls they abducted from Dapchi Government Science and Technical School, Yobe State on February 19.
While five of the girls were said to had died while in the custody of their abductors, some of the freed students said the insurgents decided to hold on to 14-year-old Miss Sharibu, the only christian among the abductees, because she refused to renounce her faith and embrace Islam.

But in a statement issued on his behalf by his senior special asistant on media and publicity, Malam Garba Shehu on Thursday, President Buhari said he was as dedicated to the liberty of the only girl still in bondage as he was when every of the 110 were in the custody of terrorists.
He stated, "The Buhari administration won't yield in endeavors to convey Leah Sharibu securely back home to her family as it has done for other young girls after she was kept down by the terrorists over her decision, as detailed, not to convert from Christianity to Islam.
President Muhammadu Buhari
"President Buhari is completely conscious of his obligation under the constitution to ensure all Nigerians, regardless of faith, ethnic foundation or geopolitical location and won't evade this responsibility.
"The President is similarly aware of the way that genuine supporters of Islam everywhere throughout the world regard the injunction that there is no compulsion in religion.
”To this impact, nobody or gathering would impose its religion on another."
"His heart goes out to the isolated parents who must watch others celebrate while their own girl is still away.

"The lone Dapchi Girl, Leah, won't be abandoned.

"President Buhari assures the Sharibu family that he will continue to do whatever he can to guarantee that they likewise have cause to cheer with their little girl soon."

Some students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,  engaged in a free for all fight with officials of security outfit of the institution who tried to forcefully eject them from one of the female hostels, Moremi Hall, on Wednesday evening.
It was gathered that the management of the university had directed the security operatives to go and eject students who were still in school and occupying rooms in the hostels, despite the fact that the institution is on holiday.
But it was gathered that effort of some officials of the security outfit to carry out the instruction was met with stiff resistance at the hall of residence by some students who opposed the forceful removal.
OAU

According to a source, this led to a clash and free for all fight between the students and officials of the security outfit.
It was gathered that the clash led to the arrest of some of the students who were arraigned in court on Thursday.

Speaking with Sahara Reporters, Adeyeye Olorunfemi, a student of the institution said, “The students forcefully evicted are those who are currently doing their SIWES and final year students who are still completing their clearance”

“Some students resisted these and they were arrested yesterday. These students slept at the Moore Police station and this morning they were charged to court located at Ajebamidele”

Confirming the incident, the school Public Relation Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarenwaju said that student tenancy in the halls of residence came to an end the moment the session end.
According to him, the school had closed for the session since February, but the students have refused to go home.

He said, “We are not forcefully ejecting the students. They are illegal occupant. They paid for a session and they must leave so the university management can do the needful. That is to clean, repair and fumigate the halls of residence. The students are to vacate their residence after examination. The session has ended and they must leave. At least one half month

Mr. Olarenwaju also confirmed the arrest of student saying they were taken in for questioning to ascertain whether they are student or not.

An army commander in the northeast has been captured on camera helping out one of the Dapchi girls released by Boko Haram.
Following the release of over 100 abducted Dapchi girls an army commander has been spotted helping the girls.
In a quite emotional shot, the Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas was spotted carrying one of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls who were released by Boko Haram terrorists during official hand over by the Nigeria Army in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
One of the Dapchi schoolgirls freed by Boko Haram on Wednesday, Khadija Grema, provided a detailed account of their journey after Boko Haram insurgents abducted them on February 19.
About 110 girls were kidnapped from their secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe State.
A total of 105 of them were freed on Wednesday morning by the insurgents who dropped them off in Dapchi without any resistant or confrontation by soldiers.
Clad in hijab (overall gown) that was uniformly sewn for all the girls by the Boko Haram, she said their journey to captivity was a harrowing experience that caused the death of some of her school mates.
“We were at the school, about to break our usual Monday voluntary fast, when the gunmen arrived. “Everyone was confused and people were screaming; one of them said we should come close to him.
“They were shooting and everyone was confused. So we ran towards the school gate,” she said in Dapchi on Wednesday.
“When we got there, they called on one Babangida to bring vehicles. “They brought the vehicles and began to drive us away. Outside Dapchi, they asked that who amongst us were fasting.
“And some of us that were fasting were asked to come down from the vehicle. They gave us Maltina, meat, groundnut cake and pure water.
“We had our prayers after breaking the fast. “Then we continued our journey until we got to a place with a big tree, they stopped and we were asked to cook food, it was dark, so they put on lamps.
“After eating, then we continued the journey for a long time until we got to a place where there is river, we came down from the trucks and they asked us to enter some canoes that took us across the river.
“Across the river, they took us to a house in one village that I don’t know; we stayed there for sometime.
“The next day, they came to ask us to come out and we were taken to the river and continued the journey until we got to where a thick forest area.
“That was where they kept us; and they have not changed our location since then. “They have been feeding us very well, they treated us very well. They did not beat us; they did not molest us.
“The people that took us away were all speaking Kanuri and Arabic. “They didn’t tell us any meaningful reason why we were freed and returned.
“They just said we are Muslims and they felt it was right for them to free us so that we will not suffer.” She said some of the girls, apparently the very young ones, who were trampled upon while they were packed in the vehicles that took them out of Dapchi, died on the way.
“Five girls died while we were on the way to the bush; most of them died because they were trampled upon inside the vehicles,” Khadija said.
She added that their abductors did not molest them sexually. “They did not molest or sexually harass us,” she said. “They even said it was wrong for women and men to sit in the same place.”
